With a camera in hand and a keen eye for stories, José Luis Cervantes, Digital and Content Specialist at JFK, brings the school’s daily life to vivid focus. A graduate in Communication Sciences from Universidad del Valle de México, campus Querétaro, José Luis has built his career around visual storytelling—a path that began, quite literally, in the spotlight.
“I started working in the audiovisual world when I was only nine,” he recalls. “I used to carry a small lamp at social events, and from there, my path took many directions.” Over the years, José Luis has worked in universities, taught both high school and college students, and even served as a sports correspondent and reporter before joining JFK.
Although he once dreamed of becoming a doctor—he even studied dentistry for two years—his true calling was waiting behind the lens. “I realized that what I was already doing was what I loved,” he says. “People would compliment my photos, they were being published, and that made me fall in love with my work.”
At JFK, José Luis finds joy in the unexpected. “Nothing is ever the same; there’s always something new to capture,” he shares. “The community is kind, and I’ve felt truly welcomed since I arrived.” For him, documenting school life is about more than just images—it’s about connection. “JFK is a living entity that communicates through every moment. The community makes you want to share its magic with those outside.”
One of his favorite parts of the job is witnessing how people open up in front of the camera. “Many say they’re not good on camera, but once I start recording, they surprise themselves—and me!” he laughs. “I also love when students or even parents wave and ask me to take a photo. Those spontaneous moments are my favorite to capture.”
Every project, he says, feels inspiring and new. “I had never worked in a school with Preschool, Elementary, and Middle School before—it’s a whole new experience, and that makes it exciting.”
What does he hope people feel when they see his work? “That it’s a beautiful reminder of the moments their children are living in this school.”
Though he claims not to have a defined visual style yet, one thing is certain—his work reflects authenticity and heart. And when it comes to motivation, José Luis keeps it simple: “I like to get better every day. I try to teach my kids that when you put effort and believe in what you do, things work out.”

Con una cámara en mano y un gran ojo para las historias, José Luis Cervantes, Digital and Content Specialist en JFK, da vida a la cotidianidad escolar a través de su lente. Licenciado en Ciencias de la Comunicación por la Universidad del Valle de México, campus Querétaro, José Luis ha construido su carrera alrededor de la narrativa visual, un camino que comenzó, literalmente, bajo los reflectores.
“Empecé a trabajar en el mundo audiovisual cuando tenía solo nueve años”, recuerda. “Cargaba una lamparita en eventos sociales, y desde ahí mi camino tomó muchos rumbos.” A lo largo de los años, José Luis ha trabajado en universidades, ha sido docente de preparatoria y licenciatura, corresponsal deportivo y reportero, antes de integrarse a la comunidad JFK.
Aunque en su niñez soñaba con ser médico —incluso estudió odontología durante un par de años—, su verdadera vocación estaba detrás de la cámara. “Me di cuenta de que lo que ya estaba haciendo era lo que me apasionaba”, comenta. “La gente me felicitaba por mis fotos, las publicaban, y así fui tomando cariño a lo que hacía.”
En JFK, José Luis encuentra alegría en lo inesperado. “Nada es igual; siempre hay algo nuevo que capturar”, comparte. “La comunidad es muy amable y me he sentido realmente bienvenido desde que llegué.” Para él, documentar la vida escolar es más que tomar imágenes: es crear conexión. “JFK es un ente vivo que comunica a través de cada momento. La comunidad hace que quieras compartir su magia con los que están afuera.”
Uno de los aspectos que más disfruta de su trabajo es ver cómo las personas se transforman frente a la cámara. “Muchos me dicen que no son buenos para salir en cámara, pero cuando empiezo a grabar, lo hacen increíble y se sorprenden a sí mismos —y a mí también—”, cuenta entre risas. “También me encanta cuando los niños o incluso los papás me hacen señas para que les tome una foto. Esos momentos espontáneos son mis favoritos.”
Cada proyecto, dice, es una fuente de inspiración. “Nunca había trabajado en una escuela con niveles de Preescolar, Primaria y Secundaria; todo es nuevo, y eso lo hace emocionante.”
¿Y qué le gustaría que las personas sintieran al ver su trabajo? “Que es un bello recuerdo de los momentos que sus hijos e hijas viven en esta escuela.”
Aunque dice no tener aún un estilo visual definido, su trabajo refleja autenticidad y corazón. Y cuando se trata de motivación, José Luis lo resume así: “Me gusta ser mejor cada día. Trato de enseñarles a mis hijos que cuando uno se esfuerza y cree en lo que hace, las cosas salen bien.”
A través de su lente, José Luis continúa capturando lo extraordinario en lo cotidiano, ayudando a nuestra comunidad a ver, recordar y celebrar aquello que hace del JFK un lugar tan especial.
