As 12th-grade Visual Arts students approach their final IB Diploma Programme exhibition, which will take place on February 10 and 11 at the Elementary’s SUM, we visited the Museum of Art of Querétaro—an experience that played a key role in strengthening their critical perspective and preparing them as young artists.
During the visit, students not only engaged with tributes to the work of influential creators such as Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nahui Ollin, María Izquierdo, Leonora Carrington, and other women who shaped the history of art in Mexico and beyond, but also explored contemporary artistic proposals. Among these, the abstract works of Esmeralda Torres stood out, particularly her collection “Let’s Go Toward the Trees,” which invites reflection on the relationship between nature, form, and emotion.
Likewise, the visit offered an opportunity to engage with the work of Víctor Argáez, a Yucatecan artist whose work proposes a deep dialogue between technique, identity, and memory. Curator López Birlain has highlighted that Argáez’s work goes beyond technical mastery, positioning itself between figurative tradition and abstraction while establishing a bridge to cultural identity. Through characters, plays of light, and subtle geometries, Argáez evokes the Mayan and mestizo imaginary, reconfiguring and transforming it to project new contemporary meanings.
Beyond the artworks on display, the visit offered an opportunity to recognize the artistic and artisanal impact of the venue itself—an architectural space marked by the Baroque style of the former Convent of San Agustín. Students analyzed how history, materials, light, and ornamentation influence the viewer’s experience, understanding the museum as a work of art in its own right.
Throughout the visit, students observed and discussed the curatorial approach of the exhibitions, reflecting on museographic decisions, dialogues between artworks, and the relationship between content, space, and audience. This exercise proved essential in helping them connect what they observed with their own creative processes and with the challenges of presenting a coherent, meaningful, and personal exhibition.
The experience at MAQRO thus became a moment of inspiration and analysis, preparing students for their own exhibition journey, where they will share their artistic voice and culminate a formative process of research, experimentation, and deep reflection.

Mientras los alumnos de 12.º grado de Artes Visuales se acercan a su exhibición final del Programa del Diploma IB que se llevará a cabo el 10 y 11 de febrero en el SUM de Elementary School, realizamos una visita al Museo de Arte de Querétaro, una experiencia clave para fortalecer su mirada crítica y su preparación como jóvenes artistas.
Durante el recorrido, los estudiantes no solo apreciaron homenajes al trabajo de creadoras influyentes como Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nahui Ollin, María Izquierdo, Leonora Carrington, entre otras mujeres que marcaron la historia del arte en México y a nivel internacional, sino que también exploraron propuestas contemporáneas. Entre ellas, destacaron las obras de Esmeralda Torres en su colección “Vamos hacia los árboles”, donde el arte abstracto invita a reflexionar sobre el vínculo entre naturaleza, forma y emoción.
Asimismo, la visita permitió acercarse al trabajo de Víctor Argáez, artista yucateco cuya obra propone un diálogo profundo entre técnica, identidad y memoria. El curador López Birlain ha destacado que su trabajo va más allá del dominio pictórico, al situarse entre la tradición figurativa y la abstracción, estableciendo un puente con la identidad cultural. A través de personajes, juegos de luz y geometrías sutiles, Argáez evoca el imaginario maya y mestizo, lo reconfigura y lo transforma, proyectándolo hacia nuevos significados contemporáneos.
Más allá de las obras expuestas, la visita permitió reconocer el impacto artístico y artesanal del propio recinto, un espacio marcado por la arquitectura barroca del antiguo convento de San Agustín. Los alumnos analizaron cómo la historia, los materiales, la luz y la ornamentación del edificio influyen en la experiencia del espectador, entendiendo el museo como una obra de arte en sí misma. A lo largo de la visita, los alumnos observaron y discutieron la curaduría de las exhibiciones, reflexionando sobre decisiones museográficas, diálogos entre obras y la relación entre contenido, espacio y público. Este ejercicio resultó fundamental para que conectaran lo observado con su propio proceso creativo y con los retos que implica presentar una exposición coherente, significativa y personal.
La experiencia en el MAQRO se convirtió así en un momento de inspiración y análisis, preparando a los alumnos para su propia aventura expositiva, en la que compartirán su voz artística y culminarán un proceso formativo de investigación, experimentación y reflexión profunda.
