For the fourth consecutive year, John F. Kennedy, The American School of Querétaro, has been certified as an Eco School by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) — a distinction that highlights the ongoing commitment of the entire JFK community to environmental care and sustainability.
In addition, our school received the LEAF (Learning About Ecosystems and Forests) certification for the second time. This recognition promotes the integration of outdoor learning experiences into the academic program, ensuring the development of generations with sustainable mindsets and environmental awareness. The LEAF program aims to empower students as leaders in environmental education and Positive Change Agents, encouraging them to extend their learning beyond the classroom and into their communities to make a lasting difference.
The certification ceremony took place on October 28 in the Elementary School SUM, where the Secret Garden was officially unveiled, and a video showcasing the project’s journey—an initiative born from the creativity of the EcoClub students—was presented.
The event was attended by Janet Campos, Project Manager of the Eco Schools program; Roberto Romero, Technical Analyst of Educational Programs; members of the EcoClub; JFK academic directors Debra Cortney (Preschool Principal), Mark Dunn (Elementary School Principal), Camille Casses (Middle School Principal), and Dave Brown (Assistant Director); and Marlene Cruz, Sustainability Coordinator.
Lina Zenteno, a student and representative of the EcoClub, shared: “The EcoClub is a place where I feel happy because everyone there shares the same vision—to care for and protect our planet.”
Janet Campos congratulated the community, stating: “From this moment, you are the best builders of both the present and the future. I want to thank you for being part of the positive changes that have allowed your school to maintain its fourth Eco Schools distinction, one of the most important international recognitions.”
Dave Brown, Assistant Director, also highlighted the importance of this accomplishment, saying: “Thank you to Marlene and the members of the EcoClub for your initiative in piloting programs, your creativity in making sustainability engaging through new projects, and your tireless efforts in keeping a green culture a motivating force in the community.”
He concluded by sharing a meaningful reflection: “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they will never sit.”
Special recognition goes to Miss Antares Hernández, Miss Lorena Pérez, and Miss Cristina Vergara for their valuable support and commitment to promoting environmental awareness through the EcoClub.
The Eco Schools program, endorsed by UNESCO through the Greening Education Partnership, is one of the world’s leading initiatives in environmental education. Por cuarto año consecutivo, John F. Kennedy, The American School of Querétaro, ha sido certificado como Eco School por la Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), una distinción que resalta el compromiso continuo de toda la comunidad JFK con el cuidado del medio ambiente y la sostenibilidad.
Además, nuestra escuela recibió por segunda ocasión la certificación LEAF (Learning About Ecosystems and Forests). Este reconocimiento promueve la integración de experiencias de aprendizaje al aire libre dentro del programa académico, asegurando el desarrollo de generaciones con una mentalidad sostenible y conciencia ambiental. El programa LEAF busca empoderar a los alumnos como líderes en educación ambiental y Agentes de Cambio Positivo, alentándolos a extender su aprendizaje más allá del aula y hacia sus comunidades para generar un impacto duradero.
La ceremonia de certificación tuvo lugar el 28 de octubre en el SUM de Elementary School, donde se inauguró oficialmente el Jardín Secreto y se presentó un video que mostró la trayectoria del proyecto, una iniciativa nacida de la creatividad de los alumnos del EcoClub.
El evento contó con la presencia de Janet Campos, Project Manager del programa Eco Schools; Roberto Romero, Analista Técnico de Programas Educativos; miembros del EcoClub; los directores académicos de JFK Debra Cortney (Preschool Principal), Mark Dunn (Elementary School Principal), Camille Casses (Middle School Principal) y Dave Brown (Assistant Director); y Marlene Cruz, Sustainability Coordinator.
Lina Zenteno, alumna y representante del EcoClub, compartió: “El EcoClub es un lugar donde me siento feliz porque todos compartimos la misma visión: cuidar y proteger nuestro planeta.”
Janet Campos felicitó a la comunidad diciendo: “A partir de este momento, ustedes son los mejores constructores del presente y del futuro. Gracias por ser parte de los cambios positivos que han permitido que su escuela mantenga su cuarta distinción como Eco School, uno de los reconocimientos internacionales más importantes.”
Por su parte, Dave Brown, Assistant Director, destacó la importancia de este logro: “Gracias a Marlene y a los miembros del EcoClub por su iniciativa al impulsar programas, su creatividad al hacer de la sostenibilidad algo atractivo a través de nuevos proyectos, y su incansable esfuerzo por mantener una cultura verde como una fuerza inspiradora dentro de la comunidad.”
Concluyó compartiendo una reflexión significativa: “Una sociedad crece y se fortalece cuando los hombres mayores plantan árboles cuya sombra saben que nunca disfrutarán.”
