Our 3rd grade students worked on the transdisciplinary theme “How We Share the Planet”, focusing on the following Central Idea: “Understanding the properties and changes of matter allows us to innovate and develop technologies that drive progress in various fields.”
Throughout the unit, they explored key concepts such as physical and chemical changes, their reversible and irreversible characteristics, and the properties of matter. To reinforce their learning, they conducted various experiments that allowed them to observe these phenomena in action.
As a culminating activity and summative assessment, the students prepared different products, such as popcorn, popsicles, salt dough, and fruit cocktails, which they then “sold” to their 1st-grade peers in a dynamic “scientific market.”
Upon arriving at the stand, the younger students listened attentively to the explanations about the types of changes that occurred in each product and the properties of the materials used. Finally, they used tickets to “buy” the products, turning the experience into a meaningful, hands-on, and fun learning opportunity.

Entendiendo cómo se transforma la materia
Nuestros alumnos de 3er grado trabajaron con el tema transdisciplinario “Cómo compartimos el planeta”, enfocándose en la siguiente Idea Central: “Comprender las propiedades y los cambios de la materia nos permite innovar y desarrollar tecnologías que impulsan el progreso en diferentes campos.”
Durante la unidad, exploraron conceptos clave como los cambios físicos y químicos, sus características reversibles e irreversibles, y las propiedades de la materia. Para reforzar su aprendizaje, realizaron diversos experimentos que les permitieron observar estos fenómenos en acción.
Como cierre y evaluación sumativa, los alumnos prepararon distintos productos, como palomitas, paletas de hielo, masa de sal y cócteles de frutas, para luego “venderlos” a sus compañeros de 1º grado en un dinámico “mercadito científico”.
Al llegar al puesto, los más pequeños escuchaban atentamente las explicaciones sobre los tipos de cambios que ocurrieron en cada producto y las propiedades de los materiales utilizados. Finalmente, usaban boletos para “comprar” los productos, convirtiendo la experiencia en un aprendizaje significativo, práctico y divertido.
