5th grade students welcomed Dayana Monreal, a lawyer and migration expert, who gave a talk on this topic as part of their current unit of inquiry. The central idea of the unit is that migrations are responses to challenges, risks, and opportunities, transforming both individuals and societies on a global level.
Prior to the presentation, students had been exploring the concept of migration through a series of activities designed to provoke curiosity and generate questions. These questions served as a guide for Dayana’s talk, helping her tailor the discussion to the students’ interests and understanding.
During her presentation, Dayana emphasized the importance of understanding migration as a natural and global phenomenon. Using examples from the animal kingdom, she explained how living beings migrate to survive, such as whales moving to colder waters to reproduce and feed, and the Monarch butterflies that travel from Canada across North America to hibernate in Mexico.
Relating these natural patterns to human experiences, she highlighted that migration often occurs in search of better conditions, whether for survival in the face of crises, such as wars, or to pursue personal and professional goals, similar to teachers who have moved to work at JFK. She encouraged students to see migration as a universal possibility rather than something limited to certain people, stressing that it is a global phenomenon that affects both humans and animals.
This talk not only reinforced students’ understanding of the unit’s central idea but also aimed to foster empathy, respect, and awareness of the experiences of people from other countries, helping students recognize the challenges and opportunities that migration entails.
Los alumnos de 5º grado recibieron a Dayana Monreal, abogada y especialista en migración, quien ofreció una charla sobre este tema como parte de su unidad de indagación actual. La idea central de la unidad es que las migraciones son respuestas a desafíos, riesgos y oportunidades, transformando tanto a las personas como a las sociedades a nivel global.
Antes de la presentación, los alumnos exploraron el concepto de migración mediante una serie de actividades diseñadas para despertar su curiosidad y generar preguntas. Estas preguntas sirvieron como guía para la charla de Dayana, ayudándola a adaptar la información al interés y nivel de comprensión de los alumnos.
Durante su exposición, Dayana destacó la importancia de comprender la migración como un fenómeno natural y global. Usando ejemplos del reino animal, explicó cómo los seres vivos migran para sobrevivir, como las ballenas que se trasladan a aguas más frías para reproducirse y alimentarse, y las mariposas monarca que viajan desde Canadá a través de Norteamérica hasta México para hibernar.
Relacionando estos patrones naturales con la experiencia humana, subrayó que la migración muchas veces ocurre en búsqueda de mejores condiciones, ya sea para sobrevivir ante crisis como guerras, o para alcanzar metas y objetivos personales y profesionales, como algunos de los maestros que se mudaron para trabajar en JFK. Animó a los alumnos a ver la migración como una posibilidad universal y no como algo limitado a ciertas personas, enfatizando que es un fenómeno global que afecta tanto a los animales como a los seres humanos.
Esta charla no solo reforzó la comprensión de los alumnos sobre la idea central de la unidad, sino que también buscó fomentar empatía, respeto y conciencia sobre las experiencias de personas de otros países, ayudando a los alumnos a reconocer los desafíos y oportunidades que implica la migración.
