After successfully completing three stages of competition, our 10th-grade students, Amanda Zúñiga Argüello and Alejandro Castilla Urquiza, earned a gold and silver medal respectively at the 39th National Mathematics Olympiad. Both were honored on April 7 at the Faculty of Engineering of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ), in a special ceremony recognizing the effort of 122 medalists selected from 1,539 participants.
This is a state-level competition made up of three stages, aimed at forming the team that will represent the state of Querétaro in the National Mathematics Olympiad. The first two selection rounds took place on February 15 and February 22, while the third was held on March 22 at the UAQ.
This achievement is significant not only because of the value of participating in a competition of this magnitude but also because it reflects the dedication and hard work put in since the beginning of the school year.
It all started as a sort of challenge. When I noticed that some students finished their daily tasks earlier in class, I offered them “extra” exercises. As a math teacher, I like to encourage my students to explore and investigate beyond the curriculum, helping them discover a personal interest in mathematics by diving into different aspects of the subject. There is no better approach than the Mathematics Olympiad, which inspires not just appreciation but a true passion for math. The competition fosters ingenuity, creativity, and effective problem-solving through structured and deductive reasoning.
Gradually, their interest grew, and over time, they developed a friendly competition among themselves, either by finding the solution first or coming up with a different way to solve the problems. This enthusiasm continued until the invitation for the Olympiad arrived. I shared it with them, and six of my 10th-grade students accepted the challenge. To my surprise, all six passed the first stage, and as mentioned earlier, Alejandro and Amanda advanced to the third stage.
Now, they will undergo personal training at the UAQ facilities to prepare for the selective team that will represent the state of Querétaro at the National Olympiad. I wish them great success and, above all, that they continue to enjoy and love mathematics.

Tras superar tres etapas de competencia, nuestros alumnos de 10° grado, Amanda Zúñiga Argüello y Alejandro Castilla Urquiza, obtuvieron medalla de oro y plata respectivamente en el 39° Concurso Nacional de la Olimpiada Mexicana de Matemáticas. Ambos fueron galardonados el pasado 7 de abril en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, en una ceremonia especial en la que se reconoció el esfuerzo de 122 medallistas seleccionados entre 1539 participantes.
Esta es una competencia a nivel estatal conformada de tres etapas, que buscan formar al equipo de la delegación del estado de Querétaro para representarlo en el Concurso Nacional de Matemáticas. Los primeros dos selectivos se realizaron los días 15 de febrero y 22 de febrero, mientras que el tercero fue el 22 de marzo en la UAQ.
Este es un gran reconocimiento no solo por el valor que tiene participar en un concurso de esta magnitud, sino porque al final del día es el resultado del trabajo y esfuerzo que se realizaron desde inicios de este ciclo escolar.
Todo empezó a manera de una especie de reto. Cuando en clase veía que mis alumnos terminaban antes el trabajo del día, se les ofrecían ejercicios “extra”, pero como docente de matemáticas me gusta que exploren e indaguen no solo el conocimiento curricular sino que de alguna manera encuentren ese interés particular en la matemáticas, explorando otros aspectos de esta asignatura y nada mejor en el enfoque que las Olimpiadas Matemáticas nos ofrecen para encontrar no solo el gusto sino una pasión verdadera. Fomentando el ingenio, la creatividad, la búsqueda efectiva a la solución de problemas a través de un razonamiento estructurado y deductivo.
Y así poco a poco fui despertando su interés pues con el tiempo desarrollaron una competencia interna con algunos de sus compañeros, ya fuera encontrando primero la solución o una forma diferente de resolver los problemas. Esto continuó hasta que llegó la invitación de la convocatoria, la cual compartí y seis de mis alumnos de 10° aceptaron la invitación. Sorprendentemente los seis pasaron la primera etapa, y como comentamos anteriormente Alejandro y Amanda están pasando la tercera.
Ahora lo que sigue serán entrenamientos personales que recibirán en las instalaciones de la UAQ, para lograr obtener el equipo selectivo que representará al estado de Querétaro en la Olimpiada Nacional. Les deseo mucho éxito y sobre todo que sigan disfrutando este gusto y amor por las matemáticas.
