One of our most impactful initiatives, EcoClub, has empowered generations of students to engage in hands-on environmental projects and cultivate a lifelong passion for sustainability.

“I am studying Industrial Product Design at HOWEST in Belgium.
Learning about sustainability in JFK has served my daily life even when I don’t notice it. Now that I live alone and have to fend for myself, I notice I only buy whatever is absolutely necessary. Although since I am a girl in her 20’s I do find myself wanting clothes from time to time. For that, I’ve found an amazing app that is used in Europe for second hand clothing. This app is called Vinted and on this app you are able to buy and sell clothes. When moving from The Netherlands (where I did my gap year) to Belgium (where I am doing my first year of university), I had to get rid of a few things since I wasn’t able to bring that much. I used Vinted to sell some clothes and other miscellaneous items for a very low price. A second app I use often as well is an app called Too Good To Go. This app allows restaurants and supermarkets to reduce their food waste through the week. They sell it to you at a very low price, and you can go pick it up.
I am currently studying Industrial Product Design, and of course, when designing a product, you need to keep in mind its life cycle. I find myself using the knowledge I acquired from both ESS and Design Technology in almost all my classes. We have to keep in mind where the materials come from, what processes they go through to be able to start production, and what happens when the product’s life cycle is over. These are the moments where I am glad I took ESS because it allows me to be conscious as a designer about what materials and processes to choose from. We’ve even had the chance to visit companies and see their production processes, and one of the top priorities for the designers is to obviously keep in mind the sustainability factor. I am very glad I had ESS as one of my classes because it gives me even more insight into how every choice will affect the environment”.

“Estoy estudiando Diseño Industrial de Productos en HOWEST, en Bélgica.
Aprender sobre sostenibilidad en el JFK ha influido en mi vida diaria, incluso cuando no me doy cuenta. Ahora que vivo sola y debo arreglármelas por mi cuenta, noto que solo compro lo que es absolutamente necesario. Aunque, siendo una chica de 20 años, a veces me encuentro queriendo ropa nueva. Para eso, he encontrado una app increíble que se usa en Europa para ropa de segunda mano. Esta app se llama Vinted, y en ella puedes comprar y vender ropa. Cuando me mudé de los Países Bajos (donde hice mi año sabático) a Bélgica (donde estoy cursando mi primer año de universidad), tuve que deshacerme de algunas cosas porque no podía llevar mucho conmigo. Usé Vinted para vender ropa y otros artículos varios a precios muy bajos. Otra app que uso frecuentemente es Too Good To Go. Esta app permite a restaurantes y supermercados reducir su desperdicio de alimentos durante la semana. Los venden a precios muy bajos, y tú puedes ir a recogerlos.
Actualmente estoy estudiando Diseño Industrial de Productos, y por supuesto, al diseñar un producto, debes tener en cuenta su ciclo de vida. Me doy cuenta de que utilizo los conocimientos que adquirí en ESS y en Design Technology en casi todas mis clases. Tenemos que considerar de dónde provienen los materiales, qué procesos atraviesan para comenzar la producción y qué sucede cuando el ciclo de vida del producto termina. Es en estos momentos cuando me alegra haber cursado ESS, porque me permite ser consciente como diseñadora sobre qué materiales y procesos elegir. Incluso hemos tenido la oportunidad de visitar empresas y observar sus procesos de producción, y una de las principales prioridades para los diseñadores es, obviamente, tener en cuenta el factor de sostenibilidad. Estoy muy agradecida de haber tenido ESS como una de mis materias, ya que me da una perspectiva más profunda sobre cómo cada decisión afecta al medio ambiente.
