K1 has embarked on an exciting journey with the start of Unit 3, exploring the transdisciplinary theme “Sharing the Planet”. This unit encourages students to inquire about their rights and responsibilities in sharing finite resources with other people and living beings, fostering a sense of equality, peace, and conflict resolution.
At the heart of this exploration is the central idea: People make a difference in the lives of animals and plants. Through three key lines of inquiry—understanding the different roles animals and plants play in our lives, recognizing their needs, and learning about our responsibility to care for them—students will develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
To bring this learning to life, K1 students participated in an engaging kickoff activity featuring a special guest from Huellitas Seguras, an animal shelter dedicated to rescuing stray dogs. Mr. Pompilio Vargas, the founder of the shelter, shared his inspiring story of rescuing and rehabilitating over 580 dogs since March 2020. He explained how each dog receives medical care, socialization training, and, ultimately, the opportunity to find a home.
Through this unit, K1 students are taking their first steps toward becoming responsible caretakers of the world around them, learning that even the smallest actions can make a big difference.

K1 ha comenzado un emocionante viaje con el inicio de la Unidad 3, explorando el tema transdisciplinario “Cómo compartimos el planeta”. A través de tres líneas clave de indagación—comprender los diferentes roles que juegan los animales y las plantas en nuestras vidas, reconocer sus necesidades y aprender sobre nuestra responsabilidad de cuidarlos—los alumnos desarrollarán una apreciación más profunda por el mundo natural.
Para dar vida a este aprendizaje, los alumnos de K1 participaron en una actividad de inicio con un invitado especial de Huellitas Seguras, un refugio de animales dedicado al rescate de perros callejeros. El Sr. Pompilio Vargas, fundador del refugio, compartió su inspiradora historia de haber rescatado y rehabilitado a más de 580 perros desde marzo de 2020. Explicó cómo cada perro recibe atención médica, entrenamiento para socialización y, finalmente, la oportunidad de encontrar un hogar.
